Introduction

The problems of education and retraining of personnel for forest industry are not treated with due attention at the present. The quality of professional forest personnel training tends to lower. Training and laboratory centres of forest education institutions have serious limits for their development. Scanty financial resources allocated for educational institutions, incomplete educational base with mainly out-of-date equipment restrict the efforts of Karelian forest educational institutions to increase the quality of specialists training.

Training is provided mainly on worn-out, out-of-date equipment. It is not possible to bring practical work of students up to the proper level. Lack of modern computer equipment does not allow to computerize the process of training, the new information technologies in forestry are used insufficiently.

Forest complex has the leading role in economy of Karelia and future development of the Republic will undoubtedly depend on situation in this key brunch of industry, on competence and professional training of its specialists.

Positive development in forestry and industry cannot be expected without inculcation of advanced forest technologies, modern machinery and equipment as well as without establishing the efficient system of personnel training.
