Introduction

At present the problem of sustainable forest management is getting increasingly acute worldwide.The term "sustainable forest management" implies such human activity which does no harm to forest ecosystems but raises their productivity, conserves biodiversity and protects nature. For the time being,the world community has developed the Principles and Criteria(P & C) for sustainable management in temperate and boreal forests.The P & C have found support and approvement by the Rosleskhoz experts and will be used all over Russia.With the Principles and Criteria at hand,it is now necessary to develop evaluation measures for forest certification standards as to their compatibility with local ecological circumstances.
