Aims and research program

Aims of investigations: Research programme includes 6 sections.
  1. Description and mapping of biotopes according following plan:
    • genetic mesoforms of relief, Quaternary deposites and soils;
    • structure and dynamics of forest communities: stands and live ground cover;
    • faunistic and floristic complexes, including general lists of species and habitat distribution of rare and threatened ones;
    • forest health state, distribution of fungal diseases and insect pests.
  2. Indicating of predominate biotopes and biotopes harboured rare and threatened species (as well as biotopes where these species are likely to appear) in the experimental forest area.
  3. Differentiation of the territory based on a pool of ecological values obtained and zonation of the territory of the experimental forest area.
  4. Assessment of the ecological impact of forestry practice on the environment and biodiversity, according following plan:
    • to analyse history and methods of forest ecosystem utilisation;
    • to select key sample plots with different methods and age of cuttings within the experimental area and its surroundings;
    • to compare biodiversity and other ecological values in secondary forests on different stages of succession versus primeval forests;
  5. Recommendations on maintaining of ecological sustainability in the model area
  6. Study of natural intraspecific diversity of basic forest trees Sections 1-5 are conducted by the working group of Forest Research Institute of Karelian Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences. Co-ordinators are A.N.Gromtsev, D.Sc. (Forest Science and Forestry), E.B.Yakovlev, D.Sc. (Entomology) and Prof. Pekka Niemelä (Univeristy of Joensuu).

    Section 6 is conducted by the working group of Petrozavodsk University leaded by prof. A.P.Tsarev.
