Objectives

Basic objectives are to further the balanced development of the society by studies and demonstration in order to:

find profitable and cost-effective technological applications for silvicultural and logging operations to guarantee the economical competition ability of the Karelian forestry and forest industry;
improve the employment;
supply woody and by-products of forests for the local population;
adjust technological applications to meet environmental and ecological goals.

Detailed objectives of the studies are:

Analysis and comparisons of the concept economical sustainability in close cooperation with other subprojects.
Testing and demonstration of appropriate silvicultural methods and systems, adjust-ment of Russian and Finnish growth models to the Karelian conditions, and calcula-tion of the influence of the methods and systems on growth and yield of a stand (simulation models), survey of regeneration results, costs and labour inputs and the need of foreign currency (test results, other relevant data and literature). Survey of impacts on the forest site (strip roads, stem and root damages, soil disturbances) and other ecological factors.
Testing and demonstration of appropriate technology for logging especially in thin-nigs. Calculation of productivity, costs and labour inputs basing on test results and other relevant data and literature).Survey of impacts on the forest site (strip roads, stem and root damages, soil disturbances) and other ecological factors.
Analysis the influences of different forest operations on the economy of the area and on the economical sustainability.
